Tried again briefly tonight. Got mplayer running, and still have nosound.
Tried all sorts of Alsa mixer stuff, to no avail. There's also an
Echomixer, but that was no different.

Ran dmesg before and after connecting the Dazzle. It added the following
lines:

Any help understanding that lot much appreciated. But it seems to be happy
that there is a Dazzle out there. Tonight, the picture is a lot less jerky,
even on VLC. But still no sound!
I see the AC97 audio in there. Maybe that's where the trouble is, isn't
that a Windows driver?

Well, that's what I'm trying to do at the moment, to get it all working
locally on the PC, to check that it is working with Ubuntu. After that,
then I'll have another battle to get it to either send it all to a
DVD-writer, or else to an .iso file, either of which the Dazzle in Windows
does by default, just select the desired destination. It worked fine,
straight from the VHS output, through the Dazzle, into the PC and directly
onto a DVD. I don't have that powerful PC now, and I can't get the Dazzle
software to work either under Wine or in a Sun virtualbox with XP.
I was able to play internet radio using vlc, so that route works fine.
Or have I misunderstood what you're saying, which is quite possible?

The only output I see is a pair of tiny loudspeakers built in to the
keyboard, and they are supposed to be muted if a headset is plugged in. But
I can try that.
What else can there be? This is a laptop, I'm not doing any physical
digging!

Paul,
Answering the second part first:
I ran GNOME MPlayer from the GUI, selecting first Analog TV, and then
Digital TV, as the Source. There was no difference in the output, the
picture came up, the sound didn't, in both cases. Interesting that it did
the same with either selection.
I also have Movie Player installed, but didn't try it yet.
I'm not connected to the Dazzle at the moment, but I will be later, and
follow your other instruction. Right now, all I get is:

"david(a)david-laptop:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [A5451 ]: ALI5451 - ALI 5451
ALI 5451 at 0x1000, irq 5".

which is what I presume I'm listening to the BBC World Service on right
now.

Although I can use the command line, it is not my favourite, nor very
familiar, method, and I need guidance as to what to do. I am pretty new to
Linux, so I don't have all the experience of knowing what one does to do
what, if I haven't done it already (successfully).
Thanks for the help. More later.

And after hooking up the Dazzle, it now says:
"david(a)david-laptop:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [A5451 ]: ALI5451 - ALI 5451
ALI 5451 at 0x1000, irq 5

Pinnacle Systems GmbH DVC100 at usb-0000:00:0b.2-4,
high speed".
