I'm not Jewish, or a Mason, but a "Shriner" is one who belongs to the
Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine...one of
Masonic bodies. Shriners are Masons.

If there is a Hebrew word that sounds like "shriner", I'm not aware of
it.

He's confusing it with a beer named for a small town in Texas.

No, you are not. The Shriners are a very well known organization in the US,
famous for participating in parades, building hospitals, putting on
circuses, organizing an annual football game, constructing buildings in an
"Moorish Revival" style, and holding a huge annual convention. They are a
branch of the Freemasons.

Strictly speaking, I believe it's a tarbouche, not a fez. A fez is shorter and
lacks the taper.

(Yes, I realize that Wikipedia implies that the two terms are interchangeable,
but I have it from someone who once lived in North Africa and who knows more
about it than I do, that that's not the case.)
