NFS writes became extremely slow overnight
On Monday, July 12th, 2010 at 10:09:04h -0500, Ignoramus15939 wrote: Any ideas what might cause this? Only a couple of suggestions to consider: 1) What is the disk usage for the NFS mounted disk on Server A. If it is getting full, then that could cause a slow down for writing. 2) Is there still a proc... 14 Jul 2010 05:29
running a bash command with a timeout
Is there a nice way to run a command with a timeout around it? For example sometimes I query ~100 servers about their status using a command like so: for i in $(seq 1 99); do ipmitool 172.16.0.${i} status; echo $i ; done But let's say one server (say, 172.16.0.4) is hung or unresponsive. Then the loop nev... 14 Jul 2010 12:04
What is the best recent kernel
Due to having some unusual machines at work (with 12 cores), I need to run a custom kernel instead of Ubuntu's stock kernel. What I do is download a kernel, bunzip it, make defconfig, change config, and run a few commands like make and make install etc. I think that I have the process of installing it fully un... 11 Jul 2010 20:27
System with 12 CPUs will not boot
We have a server with 12 processors (one of those things with two physical processors with 6 cores each). Ubuntu, by default, sees only 8 CPUs. (this applies to any version, but this is specifically 8.04). To enable more CPUs I have to enable "CONFIG_X86_BIGSMP" option in the kernel and then set the maximum ... 13 Jul 2010 14:13
Stop Wi-Fi LED blinking
Hello everyone. Does anyone have a fix when using Fedora 13 (FC13) to allow the Wi-Fi LED on a laptop to be illuminated without blinking once a connection to an access point is established (IOW the way it works in MS Windows)? The fix that I was using with FC11 doesn't work with FC13. For the record I have ... 9 Jul 2010 21:38
Chrome vs. Chromium
Chrome has been accused of being, among other things, spyware from Google - some people report that Chrome calls home as often as every few seconds, transferring goodness knows what kind of data. Can the same thing be said about Chromium? Since Chromium is open source, this should be relatively straightforwa... 18 Jul 2010 21:21
process reappears
Hi, I'm using kill -9 <PID> to end a process. The command is accepted (or so it seems), but when I ps again, the process is back, but with a new number. I assume the process I'm trying to kill is the child of a parent process, and that the parent process is re-starting it. Problem is, ps -l doesn't seem to wor... 8 Jul 2010 15:51

Printers OK for CUPS but not so for HP Device Manager
I have recently installed Slackware 13.1 on my box, and the HP Device Manager can see neither of my two printers: A USB one directly connected to my box, and another USB one connected to some other Linux box in the same network. However, both printers are correctly configured in CUPS, and both of them work per... 6 Jul 2010 18:54
