Great Public and Private undergraduate/graduate schools for Comp Arch and VLSI/Microelectronics
What are some undergrad and grad schools out there that are under- recognized but still have great computer architecture, design automation, or Digital Integrated-Circuit Design programs? I'd like thread contributers to post names of universities/college programs, the country or state, private or public, and mayb... 29 Mar 2010 18:04
Which is the most beautiful and memorable hardware structure in a CPU?
I think it was a high level language feature first. Are you talking of indexed indirect addressing mode (reg+#immediate) or the link unlink instruction sets for setting the stack pointer? Would the 6502 8 bit micro (ZZ),Y mode count? Or are you more PDP-11? ... 3 Apr 2010 14:49
Interesting presentation
On the Research channel, which I receive through Dish Network, they show some of the computer science colloquiums at the University of Washington. I recently watched a lecture by professor Pat Hanrahan of Stanford. The lecture is titled "Why are Graphics Systems so Fast?". It ties together some of the topics ... 7 Apr 2010 04:34

GPU architecture references P/H 4th ed?
Dear all, I'm trying to find some decent reading pointers about GPU architecture and was very happy when I realized new P/H: Computer organization and design (4th ed) has a chapter on GPUs. I managed to get an e-inspection copy from Elsevier, but can't seem to get the companion CD chapters through the websit... 1 Apr 2010 09:00
Multi-core lag for Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 and Quake 4 on AMD X2 3800+ processor... why ?
Hello, I have played the following three games, and noticed lag when running with "multi-core (rendering (?))" enable = true. 1. Quake 4 2. Left 4 Dead 1 3. Left 4 Dead 2 This was on a AMD X2 3800+ processor with nvidia 7900 GTX 512 MB ram card. To me it seems it's simply a "game engine" problem. The... 28 Mar 2010 07:52
DANGER DANGER THIRD DAY CPU FAN FAILURE DANGER DANGER. (AMD SimNow 4.5.2 has no CPU FAN emulator :( )
I have tried and done the following things: 1. Downloaded the bios rom from bios chip to floppy disk. (Special AFUDOS bootdisk needed) (It's kinda strange afudos didn't want to run with ms-dos 6.22 bootdisk, so it needs it's own special dos ?) (Fortunately I already had all the necessary disks from the past ex... 27 Mar 2010 02:15

Bus frequency
Hello, I was asking myself about the kind of optimization that permitted bus frequency speed increase on motherboards through history (ISA, PCI, AGP, PCI-Express...) ? - Material quality of connections between component ? - Spatial considerations ? - Increase of information quantity playing with clock ? - ... 25 Mar 2010 17:24
