Pentax K2000 SLR Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens:

Note that I'm not even trying to claim the $339 price found at
FUMFIE.COM as legit, because this business is listed on the website of
known Brooklynn fraudsters as #71. Ditto for the ibuydigital and amdv
websites.

<https://www.fumfie.com/pshow/?id=178.5>
<http://donwiss.com/pictures/BrooklynStores/h0071.htm>

So for clearly reputable vendors, prices are:
$399 at Sam's Club; $419.88 at Adorama.

You're free to quibble over the minutia...as we know that you
invariably will.

Canon.

$500 at B&H, not something I'd foist onto anyone,
and not comparable to a compact digital super-zoom.

Better Nikon D3000 kit is $669,
drawback of having to change lenses.

More comparable Nikon D3000 kit is $984,
drawback of having to change lenses.

Most comparable Nikon lens (AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II
Zoom Lens) is $850 alone, still not as capable.

it makes you a dSLR owner.

Who was it that said that the dslr people are "smugly superior"?

Do you have and use a K2000 kit? Why did you snip my assessment of more
comparable (albeit more expensive) dSLR (Nikon D3000) kit? Do you
really think it's reasonable to compare the cheapest and least capable
dSLR as a realistic alternative to less expensive and more capable
compact digital cameras?

A reasonable dSLR alternative to my Panasonic FZ28, even with budget
lenses instead of a Leica lens, costs at least $1,000 (on sale):

What most appeals to me in the dSLR realm at the moment is the Panasonic
GH1 with 14-140mm f/4-5.8 lens, but I would have to cough/give up
$1,500, a full stop of lens speed, some telephoto reach, and Leica IQ.
