Seagate FreeAgent|Desk drives sleeping
I have 5 1TB Seagate FreeAgent|Desk external USB HDs connected to my unibody 2.93.GHz MBP, OSX 10.6.2. I have UNchecked the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" box in the Energy Saver pref pane. But these drives insist on going into some sort of sleep mode after a period of not accessing them. Whe... 3 Dec 2009 12:35
What's that clicking noise?
My G4 (OS 10.4.11), which I've had for many years, has suddenly started making 5 or 6 loud clicks when it boots up, or wakes from sleep. I presume (without proof) that this is from disc seeks, since apart from that everything functions normally. Is this cause for alarm? And if so, what should I do about it? ... 20 Dec 2009 18:01

Got the dreaded Leopard "invalid node structure" error message on Disk Utility, (along with ulra-slow or non-boooting everything)
Was wondering what to do about it, especially as I cant find my install discs (I have them somewhere but the only ones I can find are my new McBook Pro Leopard install discs and my Snow Leopard upgrade disc) for this 15 inch 1.5 GHz Powerbook G4. No FSCK command I can find on Single User Mode works I suppose ... 6 Dec 2009 17:15
Intel iMac can't run extended hardware test
My aunt, who lives in another city, has had Macs 20 years. In 2007 she bought an Intel iMac. She has OS 10.4.11. A few weeks ago, Safari said she wasn't connected to the internet. When she looked at Network in System Preferences, Ethernet was grayed out, but the light on her modem indicated an Ethernet conn... 30 Nov 2009 01:34

Security bug in "sudo"
If, from "terminal" on the GUI, I do "sudo ls /etc" and enter my password, I can then login on the serial port, ( or via telnet) to create a totally new session (while first one is still present) and issue a sudo command without being prompted for password. Those would be 2 totally separate processes, yet, they s... 27 Nov 2009 09:56
Security of the /Users directory
Out of curiosity, on a server with multiple users, what should be the security/ACL settings for / and /Users directories ? I don't want jDoe to be able to "ls /Users" and see the list of user directories, or doing a "ls /" and see directories he is not supposed to see. In the case of /, I do want JDoe to be ab... 29 Nov 2009 19:01
Is OS X open source?
A cousin of mine is adamant about OS X being open source. He says OS X is only a trademark that Apple puts over Darwin. When I replied I never heard about this, he answered: "Why do you believe developers would work for free on Darwin otherwise? Apple just wants to make clear that it won't provide support on ha... 28 Nov 2009 15:40
