iMac G5 sleep problem

Mac Intel GUID format?
I am going to switch to an Intel Mac shortly and have a question about the GUID format needed to boot from an external drive. I have an emergency repair partition on a firewire drive. Is there such a things as a hosts file in OS X? In OS's 9.2.2 and below there were host files which you could edit. deteriorating v.92 speeds
