Repairing an expensive speaker
I am repairing two 15" Tannoys of the Gold series. A $5k unit if we could get them. Un oscillation in a cassette deck I was using, produced a very lowed sound that damaged the speakers. One of them has 6 turns of the voice coil, lose and can be glued back. On the old days I used to repair speakers using the ... 18 Jul 2010 03:04
MCZ300DB original Sony vs generic
My distributor finally has these in stock. Both the OEM as well as the generics. The Sony parts are 16.95 while the generics are 9.60 Has anyone had any bad experiences using the generics in the D board application repair? I've used a lot of them without incident. However I have a set in which we replaced the chips... 7 Jul 2010 12:22
Electric fence operation problem
2 stage derivation of (should be) 1800V pulses. Fence had failure in the first stage probably due to intermittant corroded battery supply contact. Anyway the 15A 60V 8N06 powerFET blew along with an associated double diode BAV23. Replaced both and works to some extent. This FET has plenty of drive 5V of pulses of... 10 Jul 2010 11:37
Just occasionally, it all works out ... :-)
On 7/6/2010 11:35 AM klem kedidelhopper spake thus: [note message TRIMMING] My all time favorite was the peanut butter and bannana sandwich that someone left in a VCR. (Problem: the tape wouldn't load)....I always appreciated the snack. Lenny I guess that's going way beyond the concept of the "cup hold... 7 Jul 2010 10:09
Polaroid TLX-04011C vertical stripe
This set has a dim vertical bar about 4 inches wide just to the right of center screen. There is a normal full color picture otherwise but this "bar" is a bit dimmer than the rest of the screen, and so its noticible. The strange thing is though depending upon the scene sometimes you don't notice it at all and at ot... 9 Jul 2010 20:33
Digifusion FVRT90 freeview PVR (repaired).
Just in case anyone else is having problems with one of these, I've just fixed mine by doing a full PSU recap. Yesterday when I went to use it, it switched on and immediately froze. Unplugging for 30s and plugging back in - the 7-seg display ran through the Klingon alphabet and then went blank. All but 3 of... 6 Jul 2010 11:10

LG DVD-HDD LH7800 - no/intermittent video on inputs (E-E)
A neighbour brought me this HDD-DVD model LH7800 with the following symptoms: Playback and OSD OK at all times. Video signal (input) from both the 2 SCART sockets cracks up and screen goes black. There is good audio at all times. And yes, I have tried different leads! Dismantled it and removed the upper pcb, no... 6 Jul 2010 20:03
Doppler Flow Meters
If you have ever seen the Kill-a-Watt meter to track electric use of home appliances, you can undertsand why I was hoping for a cheap doppler meter to track liquid flow noninvasively inside piper using sound waves. I recently got a ten dollar sonic stud finder, and suspect the only reason this device can't track fl... 4 Jul 2010 17:44
IR home leak imaging
I knew someone who got some used fancy oilfield devices and imaged houses to find leaks using not only infrared but some pretty fancy math to compare how the images changed as the temperature changed during the day to night cycle. I gotta wonder if this has advanced much in the decade since. I have some siding... 6 Jul 2010 18:56
