Maxtor Ext Drive & USB Upgrade issue
I hope this is the correct group.. I recently bought a Maxtor external hard drive to use as a backup/storage drive. My PC which is 3 1/2 years old has 1.1 ports. We installed the Dantz software and the drive and backed up my PC, but I must admit the backup process was painfully slow to the point where I almost... 9 Nov 2005 21:55
Calculating possible partition size
When you specify a general partition size (such as 8000 MB), this usually gets changed to some other value, I guess because of cylinder boundaries or something. How do you calculate what is and isn't a "real" valid size for a partition? ... 19 Oct 2005 21:52

Accessing HD by bypassing BIOS?
My mom's Seagate ST38421A died after my sister's kids installed a game on her computer (I do not think the kids caused the problem, however.) The HD was factory installed into a Compaq 5441, and my attempt to diagnose the problem is the first time that anyone has touched the innards of the PC since it was asse... 18 Sep 2005 11:12

Ever-popular Maxtor DiamondMax 8 "N40P" firmware failure
I recently was given ten DiamondMax 8 drives from Maxtor. (Of course, they're all out of warranty.) All of them exhibit the well-known "N40P" problem due to the drives losing their on-disk firmware. As a result, they fail upon every boot-up. Sometimes they appear as drive "N40P" (Maxtor's internal descripti... 6 Sep 2005 23:33
