FTP - One-Click
I have a need for a "one-click" FTP utility so I can send large files to various people occasionally. I have about a half dozen full FTP servers but they all require setup and I do not use FTP enough to justify doing that. I need a simple Q&D utility anyone can use with minimum of setup - something as easy as us... 2 Jan 2007 22:43
PCI card backplate dimensions
Hi all, My family has an HP Pavilion slimline PC which has a single PCI card slot. It came with a crappy softmodem PCI card installed, which I decided to replace with a Wireless-G PCI card. The case is very slim, about 100 mm wide, so that the DVD drive has to be mounted vertically. The motherboard is a microATX... 22 Dec 2006 00:01
Diagnostics software (slightly O/T)
My computer is getting slower and slower to start up as the months pass. The hard disk rattles on for a good couple of minutes after windows 'looks' ready and I want to know what is going on! I don't detect any hardware problems (hence the O/T), but there must be software that you 'hardware guys' use to diagno... 4 Jan 2007 10:20
Easy USB HDD set-up?
I have a need to access multiple hard drives that I store as bare drives. I have been using a Dynex USB drive enclosure and swapping the drives in and out as necessary, but it's a pretty clumsy system and I've had to replace an enclosure because of my own clumsyness. Is there an easier way to temporarily hook u... 22 Dec 2006 01:06

Fade to Grey Revisited
Previously I had come to alt.comp.hardware to seek speculation about the failure of a Gateway FPD1800 LCD monitor. The monitor was exhibiting a pronounced reduction in brightness, most noticeably at the top edge and diminishing down the screen. By the middle of the screen, brightness appeared to be normal. ... 24 Dec 2006 09:56
USB Port Surge Protector
Anyone know if such a beast exists? We have guys in the factory that test power generators by hooking them up to serial ports attached to touch screens. We are using USB to serial adaptors. When they wire the device up wrong, it sends 480 volts of juice frying the adaptor. Well, that wouldn't be a big deal,... 19 Dec 2006 03:49
Best Scanner?????
