BIOS hard drive size limitations
I have a Compaq Presario desktop machine I bought in Jan 1999 so it must have been produced in 1998. It came with an IDE 4 GB hard drive and windows 98 on it. I recently install a new (old) 10 GB hard drive (Western Digital) as the primary and a Quantum Fireball 10 BG as the slave with the jumpers set to cable sele... 8 Jan 2007 13:52
I/O error on sector
Could someone please give me some advice. I have got a SATA HDD from a friends computer - a Seagate 120gig. He reports it was starting Windows XP then getting BSOD error. A boot in safe mode shows that it was stopping on mup.sys. Anyway we put the HDD in my PC to copy the data, but my PC says drive is not fo... 3 Jan 2007 14:38
max drive size over USB port
I have an older computer with a promise controller card in a PCI slot that supports a max drive size of 120gb. If I connect a external hd over a USB2 port, what is the max size of HD recognized. The primary onboard IDE is enabled (BIOS) for the floppy, is this where the computer gets what it needs to see t... 13 Jan 2007 03:07
Returning a dead drive to Maxtor without code
Recently had a 300GB SATA drive fail on me and the drive is still within guarantee, however Maxtor wont accept the drive without a code from the diagnostic software. The trouble is the drive in question locks up the machine if it is connected so there is no way to get a code. A local retailer suggested us... 2 Jan 2007 07:52
Bad Sector Count
My Win XP Pro PC suffered a BSOD yesterday telling me that part of the registry was corrupted. I restored the OS from my Acronis True Image backup but the bad sector count has increased from 3 to 5. Not knowing much about these things, is it time to buy a new HDD? Here's the SMART report. Thanks. Keith... 27 Dec 2006 14:22
3.5" external SATA HDD housing w/ USB+fireware interfaces and internal AC?
Sounds extremely specific, but in a way I can't see why such a product wouldn't be the standard - external drives are about flexibility (so USB+1394), SATA is the new format, and what's the point of having that power brick externally?! I found some units, in prices ranging from $60 to $100 - compared to $20-50 for... 28 Dec 2006 05:27
Increase size of 2003 server disk ?
> > What you're trying to do should definitely be possible. I've done similar SCSI/ATA imaging with Acronis without problems. Are you using encryption on the partition? That might be a problem. Be sure to try manually imaging the old disk and then restoring to the new disk (make sure to include t... 21 Dec 2006 10:20
What's a good HDD checker for external HDDs?
Are there free programs like SpinRite that does well to do DEEP disk checking/testings on external hard disk drives like Maxtor's USB (160 GB)? On two computers at work, I had it had it showed delay write errors. Then, Windows lose connections and I have to repower off and on to access the HDD again. I also tried d... 23 Dec 2006 17:29
Multiple SATA drive enclosure - can I do this?
Greetings, I am in the planning stages of creating 5TB of NAS for my home network. I will be creating a RAID5 solution and, for price-per-GB-reasons, have settled upon 500GB drives. As a result, this is looking like an eleven- or twelve-drive solution. I will be using SATA drives. I have researched exte... 20 Dec 2006 20:36
IBM ThinkPad R52/T43 Password Removal , RPC8394
I asked the guy on www.allservice.ro about what you said. They said that you are a guy that they refused to sell to, you never bought the software (btw is not a hundred bucks, is only half the price you mentioned). Anyhow, they sell software for professionals and they said will try to avoid thieves as much as th... 16 Dec 2006 17:31
