Knoppix and SATA

Apple, now Intel based - now better for Linux?
My main concern previously about Linux on Macs was supporting the hardware. I know there's (is/was?) Yellow Dog but I'm a Debian user and prefer things to "work out of the box". I'm thinking about setting up remote SSH access through a hole in my firewall and NAT router. I'm happy that I know what I'm doing when it comes to configuring the router so it forwards the port to the box running sshd. Network connection
I have set up a 2 PC home network using a Netgear DG632 router, and both PCs are able to connect to the LAN using Windows, but I haven't got it right for Linux yet.
