Ubuntu: ssh and vnc hang on wired connections
Hi Folks, I travel around a bit with my trusty Ubuntu laptop, regularly making contact with my desktop machine using ssh and vnc. It all works swimmingly well ... except when I am visiting Oxford University. From everywhere I have tried there, I can make the ssh or vnc connections just fine, but after a minute o... 14 Nov 2006 14:20
Changing screen resolution in Mepis
After trying a couple dozen distros, Mepis 6.0 seems to be The One for me. The only problem with it is the screen resolution. Everything else is grand . But the screen display is so small that it brings on the eyestrain pretty quickly. Could anyone please tell me how to change the resolution? Once I've done tha... 7 Nov 2006 16:27
External screen (ubuntu laptop)
I cannot make my laptop (a Dell latitude with Ubuntu) work with an external screen (a big plasma in the meeting room). My guess is that resolution/synch/other settings don't fit. (The picture on the screen has some correlation with that on the internal monitor, but it is not intelligible.) Is there a good howt... 7 Nov 2006 03:11
Quick question
Hi At the moment I'm saturated with documentation of checking out LINUX. Could someone just explain how I stop a scrolling screen following a dpkg -l command on Debian and just get a page at a time. I seem to recall something involving a pipe and another suggestion using the LESS command but how do I use ei... 7 Nov 2006 05:16
Linux equivelent of setenv DISPLAY ?
Hi all, I have discovered a neat use for my ancient HP Windows CE 2.0 handheld palmtop. With the combination of a network card I am able to Telnet from my living into my server located in an upstairs room. Having just briefly got this all working, I am wondering how I can kick off applications via the te... 1 Nov 2006 12:02
Postfix and .forward files
I've run into something that the manuals don't cover adequately. Here's the situation. I'm currently using Postfix with a "bcc_all" directive to send an archival stream of emails to a dedicated mail archive used. As a stopgap these are intercepted by a .forward file that feeds them into procmail. The procmail ... 22 Oct 2006 20:25

Debian needs Suse help to boot from RAID
IBM xSeries 226 ServeRaid 6i+ 4 x 70GB SCSI in RAID 5 with hot spare I followed the configuration instructions for this - set up the array and created a disk on that array, rebooted and installed Debian (Stable) amd64. At the end of the install I instructed grub to write to the MBR of the only disk the OS ca... 13 Oct 2006 20:25
Knopiix 3.4 slow writing to USB2 hard drive
Been using Knoppix 3.4 (2.4 kernel) running from DVD to write a drive image to an external USB2 drive, but have realised it is abysmally slow compared with the same command executed from within a resident SuSE 8.0 Pro system (by a factor of over 10x). Anyone here know of anything similar to Knoppix 3.4 that has b... 9 Oct 2006 14:34
Fixing an iPod mount point - udev or hal?
My daughter visits me regularly and often brings her iPod. I have installed gtkpod on my PC so that she can manage her mp3s on the iPod. gtkpod needs to be told where the iPod mount point is and I'd like to fix this location. Currently it is being set to /media/sda2 - note that this is a mount point not the devic... 28 Oct 2006 13:47
