Could this be a disk failing?
Hi, I was trying to upgrade Slackware over the weekend and got stuck halfway through the install. Anyhow, I put the old image back on, and notice I get this in the dmesg output: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } hda: dma_intr: s... 19 Mar 2007 21:26
DDS4 problems
I'm still having problems with tape backups, so I'd appreciate some advice on where the problem lies. Since I last posted on this topic I've gotten a new cleaning tape. I cleaned the drive and tried again. A few abortive dump attempts on different tapes, which all ended reporting media failures resulted despite... 21 Mar 2007 00:54
mt utility
I notice that the mt utility, used for issuing SCSI commands to tape drives, has vanished. It used to be part of the Fedora standard command set but vanished with the release of FC6. There is no "mt" RPM. Can anybody tell be why it was withdrawn? I'd also like to know there where I can find it and/or the name... 12 Apr 2007 20:13
cold plug with udev
I've been trying to get my head round udev, which for the most part seems to do exactly what it claims to do, but doesn't do what I think it should do... Debian "etch" with udev 0.098 (according to NEWS.Debian). What I really want to do is to run a program (scanbuttond) when my scanner is connected, and stop r... 24 Mar 2007 10:36
Pan hates this group
Dear All, A return of the article-hiding problems I had before.... Pan won;t let me see any articles in uk.comp.os.linux. All the other groups I subscribe too are fine, but no matter how many articles pan says are unread here, they all get filtered out. I have only three entries in ~/.pan2/Score, all relati... 5 Apr 2007 19:41
Another e-petition - Windows4Warships
I thought the UCOL readers might be interested in this one, although I suppose it could be off-topic. http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Windows4warships/ "We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to investigate why Microsoft Windows software is being used in mission-critical defence applications, namely on war... 30 Mar 2007 09:29
Google Earth kmz launching from firefox?
Wotcher all. I've got that amazing time-waster Google Earth installed, but one thing is bugging me; if I click on a kmz file in Firefox, it launches it in google earth, which is OK, but if google earth is already running, it launches a new window. Is there any way to get a KMZ to load into an already-running g... 15 Mar 2007 08:59
Kopete and Yahoo Messenger
Anybody use Kopete and Yahoo Messenger? If you delete a friend from your list in Kopete, does it delete the friend from the list held on Yahoo Messenger (which I assume is held at the server end)? ... 28 Mar 2007 11:55
How to solve lack of reverse DNS
My laptop takes a long time to open connections to my desktop machine. I presume it's because I'm using DHCP (with my ADSL router as the server) on the laptop so it has no entry in the desktop's /etc/hosts file. Is there a way to stop the delay? Is that what avahi's for? I suppose I could just restrict the DHCP ser... 23 Mar 2007 12:00
Audio package
I'm wondering if anyone can suggest programme(s) or application(s) that might let me try some specific audio experiments. I'll say at the outset that I realise that what I want to do is far from simple. I want to split the audio into a number of bands, graphic equaliser style. Ideally the 'standard' 1/4 octave 31... 30 Mar 2007 09:29
